Submissions Information & Guidelines

Our goal? Sharing family, parenting, humor, funny, humorous, stories, stories world wide! Do you enjoy writing? Interested in submitting a humorous story about family-life to help in this goal?

We welcome, and will consider, contributions sent to humor-submissions@humorisrelative.com! Humor Is Relative's submission guidelines are simple and listed below.
NOTATION: please notice the family, parenting, humor, funny, humorous, stories, submissions email address changed as of May 2004; I apologize for any inconvenience. Arrow pointing down.

Please do not send the story submissions as file attachments. Cut and paste the submission into the body of your e-mail, skim through to make any necessary corrections to the formatting, then send as plain text. Please note that Word documents has some characters that do not'translate' well when converted to plain text - this includes apostrophes and, sometimes, quotation marks.

Do not add to or change the subject line if it appears to simply read "Humor-Submission". If a subject line does not appear for you then use the subject line of "Humor-Submission". This is to help your submissions avoid being filtered to the bulk/trash folder of my email account.

Stories should be:
    · Humorous or Funny; this is a humor site.
    · Family is the focus of this site. This is not limited to parenting humor submissions but family somehow has to be involved or the heart of the story.
    · Humor Is Relative is not seeking fictional works.
    · Limited to mild exaggeration yet remain true to the actual humor within the event or situation.
    · Grammar and spelling checked over before submitting.
    · Original writing.

Story Lengths:
    · Minimum of 350 words. Longer length stories will be shared across multiple pages for reader's ease.

Book Excerpts:
Published a humor book, about family and-or parenting, and would like Humor Is Relative help promote it to others?
    · Send an email to humor-submissions@humorisrelative.com with a subject line of "Excerpt" [if it doesn't appear for you]. Again no attachments; cut and paste the excerpt into the body of the email. This may sound silly - but please be sure to mention the name of the book** the excerpt is from.

Excerpts should still be able to share a "whole" story with the readers so please bear that in mind and do not submit 'teaser material' or partial stories that aren't "circular" [sense of beginning, middle, and end]. Although we are a humor site we don't "tease" our readers to death.

Author Byline:

Please share a brief bio about yourself when sending in your submissions. Refer to other author's bios shared on Humor On Relative for how this is handled and preferred length thoughts.

Legalities:
HumorIsRelative.com will share story submissions in one or more of the means:
    · Listed as one of the "Recent family, parenting, humor, funny, humorous, stories, Additions" on Humor Is Relative's Humor Is Relative: Main Page
    · Top 12 Popular Stories listing based on site stats
    · Through HumorIsRelative.com's public accessible archives for an undefined and-or unlimited time basis.
    · Offering outside links to stories on Humor Is Relative. These, if offered elsewhere, will be prefaced with the same "teaser" as shared on the main page and intro of the story or essay on Humor Is Relative's site. Typically this is the title, author's name, the URL to the story, and the one paragraph introduction spiel.
    · Online Periodicals offered by the editor of HumorIsRelative.com - if site expansion allows this as a possibility. Authors will be notified if and when this is considered.
    · eBooks or other sharing methods [you will be notified in advance if your story is selected] in the future - if site expansion allows this as a possibility.
    · You will be credited at all times as the author. The author also retains all copyrights needed to resell or republish your work elsewhere.

More Legalities:
    · HumorIsRelative.com &/or Carol Wells is not to be held liable, legally or financially, for any content or copyright infringments done by another party. I hope to be able to trust the writers being honest individuals therefore submitting content that is their original work or having legal permission to submit.

    · Humor Is Relative's site nor Carol Wells will not give permission to an outside party to publish or share a copy of a story. The author of the article is the only person who can give such permission.

    · Humor Is Relative's site nor Carol Wells is not liable for the content or copyright infringments done by another party; again, I hope to be able to trust the readers to be responsible individuals and respectful of the authors' hard work and not copy without prior permission nor plagarize.

Humor Is Relative currently does not pay for submissions. Humor Is Relative will share a biographical but brief descriptive paragraph, which the author provides, underneath the story or essay to let readers know more about the writer [up to three website links** shared].

Your name will also appear on the Contributor's Page and any requests, for your articles, will be forwarded to you.

Multiple submissions allowed but the submissions generally will not be published at the same time or back-to-back. Multiple submissions will be paced out with other authors and stories if possible. I do this to help give those pieces some individual time in the limelight and help promote the author a bit more.

The author, upon acceptance of submitted story, will be informed of when to expect their story's appearance on Humor Is Relative. Holiday theme stories will be saved to appear during a time period ripe for when people are seeking stories around those time period themes. You should receive word if your submission is accepted or not within 1 to 6 weeks.

In terms of writing clips, this site would fall more under the thoughts of promotion than providing clips.

** Book links will be shared to Amazon.com, when possible, using this site's affiliate information.

Humor Is Relative thanks Cay Dickson, from Houston Chronicle, for the compliment!

A sense of humor... is needed armor. Joy in one's heart and some laughter on one's lips is a sign that the person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life.
-- Hugh Sidey

When one of my children ask, "Did you have to tell that story?" I tell the child, "Yep! It was my chance to be the center of attention ... thanks to you."

Humor helps us to think out of the box. The average child laughs about 400 times per day, the average adult laughs only 15 times per day. What happened to the other 385 laughs?
